Transitioning from a Trimester System to a "Fluid System"
Transitioning from a trimester system to a "Fluid System" was a large task our site took on this school year.  What is a fluid system?  Teachers created what is known as a cover sheet for each course that breaks down exactly what the student needs to do to earn 5 credits and the cover sheet rubrics the entire course.  In weekly collaboration, our staff has constantly adjusted their curriculum in the effort of finding a sweet spot where the expectation is that students typically finish a 5 credit course every 6 to 10 weeks of study.  Join us for this session and where we will discuss, why the fluid system works,  how it has transformed the academics at our school, and why the fluid system makes better sense for a continuation school whose enrollment constantly changing.

New Student Orientation - Setting Our Students Up For Success
The need for consistency in the transient nature of Continuation school has lead Dr. John H. Milor High School to streamline their orientation process.  JMHS intakes a minimum of 40-50 students each quarter.  We wanted to start all of our new students out on the same foot, no matter where they were coming from.  We also wanted to know what they needed from us, so we can best serve them.  The orientation we designed not only introduces the student to the school processes; such as PBIS expectations, student handbook information, and the overall school community expectations. Through the use of technology, we administer multiple assessments to attain baseline information for each individual student.  All this occurs during a traditional school day, allowing the students to attend a day of school on the JMHS campus, and get a feel for the site.  Through this orientation process, we have been able to create better initial connections with students and their families and set them up for success. Students are presented with the school social climate expectations, as well as the academic expectations.  They are informed about how to be advocates for their own education.  They learn how to read their transcripts.  Student's current academic knowledge is assessed.  They take a math assessment and write a personal essay.  These essays are assessed for writing knowledge, as well as social/emotional needs.  All aspects of the orientation utilize the content and academic language.  Our high standards for academic and social success are modeled through the way we present the information and how we present ourselves and our school.  The orientation is a snapshot, for the students, about how Milor will be when they attend.

Why Discipline Exclusions Are Ineffective, And What To Do Instead – Practical Classroom Management Strategies That Work
Students learn nothing in the office, and discipline exclusions can actually make student misbehavior worse. Yet you can't just let inappropriate behaviors slide by. This session will show participants 5 key classroom management strategies that can be implemented immediately - at no cost - that will decrease office referrals, correct disruptive student behavior, and improve student-teacher relationships. The strategies include:
- Practical ways to build rapport and trust with students
- How to create a supportive physical environment
- How to teach behavior expectations and routines instead of waiting for students to misbehave and then punishing them
- Managing your own emotions so you can avoid power struggles and escalation
- How to be consistent and fair with all students
Each participant will receive a reference guide packed with effective classroom management strategies that work. Teachers will be able to use the resource guide to implement the strategies in their own classrooms. Administrators and instructional coaches will be able to use the resource guide to train their staff.

Low Stress Classroom Strategies for Highly Successful Educators
This program presentation is for new teachers, veteran teachers, staff and administrators. This program provides tools that can be used immediately in the classroom as soon as teachers return to school. Mutual respect, camaraderie, team work and a true sense of belonging are a few of the positive results of incorporating the tools of the 9 Essential Skills for the Love and Logic Classroom®. This interactive presentation is facilitated by an award winning retired teacher. If we are not prepared for someone else’s initial reaction to our new skills, we have no new skills. Otherwise, they will try and perhaps succeed in making us go back to our old ways. If a student can argue with a teacher, that student will never develop respect for that teacher. If a student brings a teacher down to their level, the teacher is no longer an authority figure. Teachers do not have to be a friend, but a powerful, loving, friendly authority figure. The benefit is respect and admiration. Teachers can produce an environment that compels students to actively engage, as well as teach accountability and problem solving in a loving way.

Listen as Wise Youth Discuss what Supports or Undermines Resiliency and Success
A youth panel will discuss factors that are at the core of student resiliency and learning. Participants will (1) learn about factors that support or undermine youth engagement in school and the community and (2) learn about factors in school and the community that support or undermine youth resiliency in the face of challenges (3) experience how wise youth are, especially about these issues. This will include overall school climate, academic challenges, behavioral and attendance challenges, and being respected in their cultural and other forms of identity. Resiliency involves how one continues in the face of adversity. Local control accountability plans address academic data, as well as school climate concerns that include absenteeism, behavioral interventions, and designated student populations. The plans are expected to include input from key stakeholders. This workshop goes directly to the most numerous stakeholders, students. We need to reshape our actions based on what they say. As time allows, participants will discuss in small groups amongst themselves how to implement the wisdom just shared by the youth panel.

The ABCs of S.E.A.L (Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning)
To flourish means “to grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as a result of a particularly favorable environment.”  If we want students and staff to flourish, then educational leaders need to plant the seeds, nourish the environment, and cultivate the climate for optimum growth. Research is clear that social-emotional learning (SEL) is critical for student success in school, college, work, and life. The truth is, SEL isn’t separate from academics – the two go hand-in-hand, and that is why this series is called S.E.A.L. – Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning.

In this engaging session, Dr. Joelle Hood will demonstrate how SEL needs to be modeled from all adults and integrated into all areas of the school site and district. She will share how she has brought this deep dive learning into Executive Cabinets and District Management Retreats, into multi-day sessions with teachers and counselors, and into an innovative and interactive online course to empower educators with the opportunity to strengthen their own social-emotional intelligence, well-being and resilience, and deepen their understanding of WHY these skills are so important to students and staff. Participants will engage in discussions and activities that they can immediately replicate with their staff. to initiate positive change in the lives of all stakeholders. The experiential learning is designed to help leaders have a deeper understanding of S.E.A.L. in order to provide support and guidance to their staff, as well as to infuse this mindset into site and district practices.

Yoga in Schools, A Partnership for Kids
In most cases, students who attend alternative high schools have a hard time finding ways to center themselves. Through a strong community partnership with a yoga studio, we have taken on a different approach to PE and offered students a therapeutic way to meet stress, beat stress and cope with it in a healthy way. Not only are students learning strategies to stay mentally and physically healthy in school, they are taking these strategies home to their families where, in many cases, there is trauma, little time for processing and no time for healthy habit building. Students are sharing ways to be resilient with one another and their families while increasing their attendance, decreasing their negative behavior at school and performing better in their classes. Through this partnership, we would like to share some of these strategies with you as we have seen a tremendous change over the past three years.

In this workshop, we look at the brain, how we are wired to respond to danger (trauma). We go the next step: now that we understand behavior better after looking at the neuroscience, what can we do? How do we help ourselves and our students? How do we implement low-cost policies in our classrooms and schools that will help us with challenging behavior and disengagement? How do we make ourselves more patient and less frustrated at work? In this workshop, we will have tangible ideas you can implement your next day at work. Literacy and ELD strategies Across the Content Areas
Valley High School in Escondido offers a Connections course once a day to all students enrolled. The Connections course is a trimester long course that can be repeated for elective credit.  The Connections class is intended to help students make the academic, career and college connections necessary to become successful in high school and post-secondary endeavors across interdisciplinary areas. The classroom and extended learning experiences will provide students with conceptual understanding and development in the following areas: goal setting, personal focus of responsibility, ownership of personal actions, decision making/problem solving, time management, organizational skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills, college/career readiness, financial literacy, computer skills, community service learning and development of a professional portfolio. Due to the developmental nature of the acquisition and mastery of all course components, this course is to be taught with fluidity which emphasizes skills in advancing levels of application which will include site adopted literacy routines aligned to both English Language Arts and College & Career Readiness Standards. Each unit of study is designed to foster student growth in content literacy (reading and writing).  All units are broken down to facilitate student participation in a required reading/writing activity two days per week.  Students may be enrolled in Connections up to two years and will continue to develop their skill, for a maximum of six trimesters of coursework. I intend to present on this course and how it can be adopted and modified to be taught in other continuation school settings. It can be a stand-alone curriculum or the literacy strategies can be applied across the content areas.

Local control accountability plans address academic data, as well as school climate concerns that include absenteeism, behavioral interventions, and designated student populations. Mental health challenges can undermine success. Much of the talk about educational solutions is framed as Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. Our workshop presents how all of these challenges and proposed answers must be considered together in an integrated approach we call our Pyramid Scheme. Participants will (1) learn about why a Multi-tiered SYSTEM of Support must provide an integrated approach to attendance, behavioral interventions and supports, and mental health.   (2) learn how each of these integrated elements area can be addressed in Tier 1 Prevention, Tier 2 Early Identification and Response, and Tier 3 Intensive Interventions;  (3) Learn about team approaches, including Student Support Teams and School Attendance Review Boards that integrate all of these elements. As time allows, participants will discuss in small groups amongst themselves how to implement MTSS Pyramid Schemes.

THE BIOLOGY OF BELONGING
Strong social connections strengthen our immune system, lower anxiety and depression, and even help us live longer.  Additionally, people who feel connected are more empathetic, trusting, and cooperative.  This engaging and interactive workshop, will provide participants with research, strategies, and structures for building belonging and cultivating connection in the classroom, the staff room, at home, and in the community.
If we want to increase the likelihood that our students will be successful, we have to “Maslow Before We Bloom.” Establishing a sense of belonging and connection in the classroom creates an academically safe environment where students are more likely to participate, ask questions and engage in the lessons.  Belonging can also strengthen hope and optimism, key factors in resilience, which is needed for academic success.
In this highly engaging and interactive workshop, participants will learn research explaining the biology of belonging, as well as strategies and structures that provide opportunities to build belonging and cultivate connection in classrooms, in staff rooms, at home, and in the community.

Transforming Stress into Challenge: Games
Students who have inappropriate responses to stress and challenge will not be able to focus on any academic achievement, as they can sabotage themselves with their behavior. This workshop seeks to help teachers and leaders understand the vital importance of social-emotional learning as foundational to the academic success of students. Scientific research has demonstrated the human body and brain decrease in efficacy when stressed; both increase in efficacy when challenged. Many continuation school students experience a great deal of stress in their lives, from home to school. In this session participants will experience several games that help teach productive and appropriate responses to stress and failure as well as learn the neuroscience and physiology underlying these experiences. Games will be played, then debriefed; this session will include conversation to facilitate understanding the pros and cons of implementing play curriculum. By the end of this two-hour session participants will be able to: 1. Understand the science behind the use of play as an avenue to transforming stress to challenge, 2. Participate in several games to uncover what students and staff may experience, 3. Understand how to apply games to your specific context, 4. Access additional resources.

Creative Writing: Pathway to Increased Academic Literacy and Expanded Interpersonal Skills
This interactive presentation offers practical creative writing techniques and strategies that are presently being used successfully with incarcerated and other underserved youth in the greater Sacramento area. Through supportive and non-threatening creative writing practices, teen writers learn the power of their stories, as they build writing fluency, and gain respect for the stories of others. A writing community develops that often extends beyond the classroom. The motivation to understand and use standard conventions of writing greatly increases as students strive to communicate their stories clearly. Creative writing students are motivated to improve their story-telling skills through increased vocabulary and through learning and practicing standard writing conventions. This in turn leads to greater motivation to read the work of others and to recognize what works for other writers. The non-threatening nature of these creative writing practices and the ongoing sharing of written stories leads to a sense of community and engagement.

Why is bullying such a prevalent behavior that between 100-400 MILLION kids engage in it each year? Why aren’t anti-bullying programs effective? In alternative education, we encounter many students with challenging behavior. But what is going on in the brain of a “misbehaving” child? And how do we approach behavior in a way that will create meaningful and lasting changes in the child?
