Students who have inappropriate responses to stress and challenge will not be able to focus on any academic achievement, as they can sabotage themselves with their behavior. This workshop seeks to help teachers and leaders understand the vital importance of social-emotional learning as foundational to the academic success of students. Scientific research has demonstrated the human body and brain decrease in efficacy when stressed; both increase in efficacy when challenged. Many continuation school students experience a great deal of stress in their lives, from home to school. In this session participants will experience several games that help teach productive and appropriate responses to stress and failure as well as learn the neuroscience and physiology underlying these experiences. Games will be played, then debriefed; this session will include conversation to facilitate understanding the pros and cons of implementing play curriculum. By the end of this two-hour session participants will be able to: 1. Understand the science behind the use of play as an avenue to transforming stress to challenge, 2. Participate in several games to uncover what students and staff may experience, 3. Understand how to apply games to your specific context, 4. Access additional resources.
